Second book in the French Frontier series
...Charles
and Jazelle Bruneau escaped the French Revolution and have farmed in
Quebec for four years. Charles decides to go with notorious
independent fur traders to Minnesota and the Far Sea. Jazelle
refuses to stay at home and joins him and Pierre DuBois as they
paddle up the St. Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers, traversing
death-defying portages, dangerous rapids and wind demons on Lake
Superior.
Jazelle disguised as a man called Jaye picks up her paddle and
determines to hold her own with the men, but always afraid she will
be discovered as a woman in the fur posts.

They wade the Savannah Portage, worst in America, to the Chippewa
tribe on Rice Lake. They are abandoned and live the native way at the
Mud River Village, until lied against and cast from the village. Always
Jazelle trusts the amulet that saved her from the guillotine.
Captured by Hadatsa Sioux and prepared to die, Jazelle’s shirt is ripped
away and discloses the amulet, formerly stolen from this chief and the
symbol of his power over other tribes. Will the amulet save her now?
