The Story Of The Virgin Mary
Jesus' mother, the Virgin Mary, comes
to life as a real person living through the same emotions women feel
today. Pfeiffer has torn away the mists that shroud Mary, showing
her vulnerability, her humanity, and her faith. From shepherd's hut to
palace, from humiliation to exaltation, Mary believes God's promise that
her son will be king. She despairs in the circumstances of her life when
God does not seem to be keeping this promise. The fear of King Herod
haunts her from childhood to her death in Jerusalem.
Epilogue
Rain beats against stone. Wind
rattles the parchment on the tiny window where Mary huddles beside the
hearth, a bed rug pulled close around her shrunken shoulders. She hears
military boots tramping nearer. Blood pounds in her ears. She does not
breathe. The stamping halts. Spear handles clatter on stone. They are
Herod's soldiers ferreting out any who follow Jesus--with orders to kill
them--especially the mother of the despised Messiah.

"At last they have found me, even
hidden here outside the walls. They will be back, and I am ready..or am
I? My heart yearns to be with you, Jesus. It is so easy to say death is
welcome until one faces it. But death is not welcome when it comes
with blood like it did to...I will not think of them now." |
